Room of the Future?

The Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition Conference last week displayed its Guestroom 2010 hotel room of the future, offering a glimpse at dozens of potential enhancements for business travelers. IBM’s keyless door opener, for example, allows customers to check in online and upload room keys to their mobile devices, eliminating the front desk experience. HITEC also sees more hoteliers sending to customers' mobile devices welcome messages and information on meetings, local events and points of interest, reservations and loyalty programs.

Meanwhile, the room's "revolutionary desk" integrates all computer hardware into the body of the desk so that there are no pesky wires. Already a norm, 24/7 Internet access would be provided--though there was no mention of whether it would be free.

Also in the future, business travelers will be able to connect to their families, colleagues or clients over a videophone; power-up their electronic devices with universal chargers; and take advantage of electronic translation services, virtual libraries and 3D golf course tours.

But the best might be the bed without a mattress ...
